The fall checkpoint is November 15 and the last day for child portfolio transfer requests is November 1 at 5pm. Teachers will see the last update on their roster the morning of November 2 and all students on their roster at this point need to be assessed. Children who enroll or transfer in after the November 1 cut-off date will not be assessed due to insufficient amount of time for teachers to carefully observe and assess them by the due date.
Please do not try to assess students in one week. Take advantage of the full assessment period and carefully observe and assess all students over time to ensure students’ skills, abilities and knowledge have been captured correctly.
Each district may set their own due date as long as it is before November 15 if that aligns better with their school calendar. Administrators should communicate about their own due date in advance with their teachers.
Per WAC 392-425-055, Transition to Kindergarten (TK) students must be assessed twice during the program year. They must be assessed at the beginning of the program year and one more time before the end of the program year. OSPI recommends the second assessment be done in the spring checkpoint to allow progress and growth monitoring.
Checkpoint Dates Fall checkpoint: November 15 Winter checkpoint: March 15 Spring checkpoint: June 15
All transfer requests must be submitted 2 weeks prior to each checkpoint to allow time for teachers to observe and assess.
Teaching Strategies has updated the Interrater Reliability (IRR) certification for WaKIDS users and the process is now more accurate to what is being measured for WaKIDS. The number of questions asked on the test is streamlined and the overall time it takes to complete the process also has decreased.
The IRR is strongly encouraged by OSPI and each district may have its own policy requiring completion so users should confirm with their district administrators.

The Student Information department at OSPI made a significant update to the WaKIDS report on the State Report Card. They removed the TK population from the kindergarten readiness report so now it only includes kindergarten students.
Reporting TK students separately on WaKIDS Whole-child Assessment measures is currently on the roadmap. OSPI will announce when TK student data is ready to publish in a developmentally appropriate and user-friendly format.

Transition to Kindergarten (TK) is a legislatively established and authorized program for children who are at least 4 years old by August 31 and have been identified through a screening process as needing additional preparation to be successful kindergarten students in the following school year.
Read the new Transition to Kindergarten: Minimum Standards and Requirements guidance which provides the minimum standards and requirements for TK programs, ensuring that they serve eligible students of all abilities who need additional preparation to be successful in kindergarten and who lack access to other early learning group settings.
In case you missed it: The OSPI Early Learning Team hosted an overview of the TK Minimum Standards and Requirements. You can access the PowerPoint here. If you would like to view a recording of the webinar, please email Alondra Mendoza alondra.mendoza@k12.wa.us.
