Did you miss the performance-based pathway tool review webinar?
SBE hosted a webinar on Thursday, February 22 to review the tools and guidance developed for the new performance-based graduation pathway requirement. We welcomed special guests, Maria Muto, secondary school counseling program supervisor and Clarisse Leong, director of operations, secondary education -- both from OSPI.
The tools for the performance-based pathway (available on the performance-based pathway page) include:
- focus standards in math and English Language Arts that will need to be addressed in a student’s work.
- rubrics that include scoring criteria for evaluating a student’s project.
- task models that outline the components that must be included in each student’s work.
- student checklists that will help a student manage their project and ensure they complete all the required components.

This session, Board members have testified on a number of bills. Two highlights from previous weeks include Chair Bill Kallappa's personal and impactful testimony on HB 1879 - Naming the curriculum used to inform students about tribal history, culture, and government after John McCoy (lulilaš), which has passed both chambers and will be sent to the Governor for signature soon. See also Brooke Brown's recent comments on ESB 5462 - Promoting inclusive learning standards and instructional materials in public schools, which was passed by the Senate and now awaits consideration by the House floor.
Upcoming dates of note:
- Opposite House Cutoff, Friday (3/1). This is the deadline by when bills must be passed out of the second house (Senate bills out of the House, and House bills out of the Senate). Bills that do not pass are considered “dead” unless they are revived as “Necessary to Implement the Budget” (NTIB).
- Sine Die (adjournment), next Thursday (3/7)
