SBE will host a webinar on Thursday, February 22 at 9:00 a.m. to review the tools and guidance developed for the new performance-based graduation pathway requirement. We welcome special guest, Maria Muto, Secondary School Counseling Program Supervisor at OSPI. These tools (available on the performance-based pathway page) include:

- rubrics that include scoring criteria for evaluating a student’s project.
- task models that outline the components that must be included in each student’s work.
- student checklists that will help a student manage their project and ensure they complete all the required components.
We will present on these tools and offer answers to questions from the field. The session will be recorded and available as a resource. Register here:

On Monday, the Senate Early Learning & K-12 Education Committee held a public hearing on SB 5964 which would provide free school meals (breakfast and lunch) to any requesting student beginning next school year. Lily Fredericks, a student representative from the Shoreline School Board, provided powerful testimony based on her personal experience.
Representative Santos also introduced a bill (HB 2335) concerning state-tribal education compacts. The bill allows the compacts, which are negotiated between OSPI and the governing body of a tribe or qualifying school, to include exemptions to basic education requirements and certain compulsory coursework and activities. The bill also requires OSPI to consult with SBE on compact provisions that relate to SBE’s duties or authorizations. The House Education Committee passed the bill out of committee with a unanimous vote. Chair Santos’ remarks at the public hearing and upon final passage are available on TVW.
