Managing Our Personal Responses to Data/Feedback
Data is not inherently good or bad. As humans, it is a natural reaction for our brains to have strong reactions that can be categorized as 'good' or 'bad' to data. These reactions can block us from using the data or feedback to improve our practice for students. In "Three Feedback Triggers" Stone & Heen, 2014 they outline three main types of responses:
-
Truth Triggers: “The data or feedback is wrong, unfair, unhelpful”
-
Relationship Triggers: “I can’t hear this data or feedback from you”
-
Identity Triggers: “The data or feedback is threatening to me or my program and I’m off balance”
Tips for Managing 'Triggers':
- Understand these responses are normal and common
-
Actively monitor yourself for these triggers when having discussions about the data
- Learn how your wiring and temperament affect the stories you tell yourself
-
Mentally separate the data/feedback from the person delivering it
- Be curious
- Cultivate a growth mindset
- Focus on what’s best for students, rather than what’s best for adults
