With the new fall checkpoint on November 15, the last day for child portfolio transfer requests is November 1 at 5pm. Teachers will see the last update on their roster the morning of November 2 and those who show up on their roster at this point need to be assessed. Children who enroll or transfer in after the November 1 cut-off date will not be assessed due to insufficient amount of time for teachers to carefully observe and assess them by the due date.
Each district may set their own due date as long as it is before November 15 if that better aligns with their school calendar. Administrators should communicate about their own due date in advance with their teachers.
All teachers new to kindergarten, including TK, must complete the required WaKIDS 101 training in order to meet the requirements and assess children. The summer WaKIDS 101 trainings for the 2023-24 school year are coming to a close and we will welcome new teachers to the mid-year trainings beginning in January. Training dates will be added soon and can be found on our WaKIDS Training and Webinars page.
Teaching Strategies® recently released an updated Interrater Reliability Certification experience for Preschool/4-year-olds. It now includes:
- a shorter exam with new sample child portfolios,
- wraparound professional development resources, and,
- a new design to increase teacher confidence.
It is recommended for Transition to Kindergarten teachers that they obtain this certification instead of the kindergarten version. Please note, OSPI will not reimburse users for obtaining this certification unless they complete the IRR certification during their WaKIDS 101 training period. Teachers may inquire with their districts if the IRR is a district requirement.
The updated IRR certification for kindergarten is expected to be available in early 2024.
Refer to this page for instructions on accessing the certification process.
Transition to Kindergarten enrollment information will be available on this page in October after school districts report their enrollment. The OSPI TK page also has information about the TK Emergency Rules for the 2023-24 school year and resources for opening a TK classroom.
Is your district planning to open a TK classroom? Complete the 2023-24 TK Assessment Profile to let OSPI know of your intention with TK and keep up to date with TK/WaKIDS data due dates. This information does not impact district funding and is used for the purpose of caseload forecasting as well as planning TK/WaKIDS Training.
