Cora Flowers is an ambitious student at Rogers High School in Puyallup who wants to become a pediatric travel nurse! She's attending classes through Clover Park Technical College to achieve her Certified Nursing Assistant status. She's getting hands-on work experience at a rehabilitation center where she's learning how to care for people. We're thankful for people like Cora, and for Star (our intern, for interviewing her!
Zoos have amazing learning experiences and jobs - beyond what comes to mind for most people (Zookeeper). Going to zoos also increases kids' perspective of how to be good stewards for animals on our planet.
While in the Seattle-area for the last Board meeting, interns Indy and Star learned a little bit about careers in zoos and how two education coordinators got to where they are today: the amazing Woodland Park Zoo.
Thank you to Emma and Nemesia for letting us tag along for a glimpse into your world. Know of someone with a cool job that would like to be featured by our interns? Let Stephanie (SBE's Director of Communications) know.
You’re invited: design a new graduation pathway option
Because of new legislation (HB 1308), the State Board of Education (SBE) must adopt official rules (state laws in the form of Washington Administrative Code) to implement the performance-based graduation pathway option. These rules will give more detail about the requirements for ensuring the safety and quality of the learning experience and the assessment criteria for determining the student has demonstrated the learning standards.
Join us for an interactive webinar on Thursday, July 20 from 12:00-1:30 p.m. with the State Board of Education’s Director of Career- and College-readiness, Linda Drake.
The performance-based pathway allows students to show what they know and can do in real-world, hands-on ways that align with their individual goals for life after high school. This student-centered pathway is intended to be customizable, with the aim of being relevant and engaging to the student. Find timelines for feedback and more on SBE's blog.
Save the date
The Education Commission of the States (ECS) and SBE will host a webinar on performance-based pathways in other states July 25 from 12-1:30 p.m. More details coming soon! Register for the Zoom: ECS/SBE.
Share your story
Do you know of a culminating project or a student led project currently happening in a school that you think could count as this new pathway option in the future? We want to hear your stories. Please email SBE’s Director of Communications, Stephanie Davidsmeyer. She can work with you to highlight this experience and the student, and/or educator involved in the project.
