On June 27-29, the Board met to continue on their strategic planning journey and to approve private schools, waivers, basic education compliance, and more. The first day, the Board welcomed students and partners to engage in discussion and relationship-building. The second day, Senator Bob Hasagawa joined to welcome members to the area and engage on education topics. The final day, Board members and staff welcomed new student member, Castulo Gonzalez, and bid farewell to groundbreaking senior student member Pavan Venkatakrishnan (photographed with Chair, Bill Kallappa). Find meeting highlights on the recap.
Find the agenda, supporting materials, and links to TVW’s video footage of the meeting on SBE’s meeting site.
In the first in a special series, "From Student to Professional," SBE Intern Indy sat down with Mike Flood, Seahawks VP of Community and External Affairs. We learned more about his professional journey and the people and experiences that helped him along the way. The interview and tour of the Virginia Mason Athletic Center were an amazing experience for our students and members - thank you to the Seahawks for letting us look around and learn more from some amazing professionals!

You’re invited: design a new graduation pathway option
Because of new legislation (HB 1308), the State Board of Education (SBE) must adopt official rules (state laws in the form of Washington Administrative Code) to implement the performance-based graduation pathway option. These rules will give more detail about the requirements for ensuring the safety and quality of the learning experience and the assessment criteria for determining the student has demonstrated the learning standards.
Join us for an interactive webinar on Thursday, July 20 from 12:00-1:30 p.m. with the State Board of Education’s Director of Career- and College-readiness, Linda Drake.
The performance-based pathway allows students to show what they know and can do in real-world, hands-on ways that align with their individual goals for life after high school. This student-centered pathway is intended to be customizable, with the aim of being relevant and engaging to the student. Find timelines for feedback and more on SBE's blog.
Save the date
The Education Commission of the States (ECS) and SBE will host a webinar on performance-based pathways in other states July 25 from 12-1:30 p.m. More details coming soon! Register for the Zoom: ECS/SBE.
Share your story
Do you know of a culminating project or a student led project currently happening in a school that you think could count as this new pathway option in the future? We want to hear your stories. Please email SBE’s Director of Communications, Stephanie Davidsmeyer. She can work with you to highlight this experience and the student, and/or educator involved in the project.
