2023 - 2024 Private School Approval
Please find information below:
On Thursday, June 29, the State Board of Education voted to approve 384 private schools for the 2023 - 2024 school year: 369 schools were fully approved and 15 schools were provisionally approved.
New schools will receive a building code and information about EDS Access within the next two weeks.
Provisional approval allows a school to remain open while resolving issues such as building inspections or the hiring of at least one Washington state certificated teacher. As soon as issues have been addressed, and / or no later than October 1, 2023, please email supporting documents, such as building or health inspection paperwork or a staffing report. Provisionally approved schools will be considered for full approval at either the August or October 2023 board meeting. If outstanding issues are not resolved, June provisional approval will expire on October 31, 2023.
If you do not see your school on the private school approval list, your school’s approval is pending. You will find more information and your school’s status posted on the Private School Approval | SBE (wa.gov) website. When you download the 2023 - 2024 application status list, you will see that Column E is highlighted, and here you’ll find your approval status:
- “April Full” indicates that your school was approved for operation in the 2023 - 2024 school year at the April 2023 board meeting. (If you have not yet downloaded your Certificate of Approval, see directions below.)
- “June Full” indicates that all application materials have been reviewed and that your school was recommended for full approval to operate in the 2023 - 2024 school year at the June 2023 board meeting.
- “August Full” indicates that all application materials have been reviewed and that your school will be recommended for approval at the State Board of Education board meeting on August 17, 2023.
- “Provisional” means that most of your application materials have been received and reviewed, and your school will be considered for provisional approval at the August board meeting. Please email your missing materials to the private schools manager as they become available.
Other notes in this column indicate an issue with your application. In most cases, this is a problem with your upload, a blank staffing report or certificate of compliance. Please email the missing document or contact the private schools manager if you have questions.
Note that we do not email Certificates of Approval to schools. Certificates of Approval are made available for download on the private schools page within two weeks following board approval.
An official State Board of Education Web Badge is available to fully approved private schools. The Web Badge is a small image for your website to indicate that you are an approved private school. If your school’s approval for 2023 - 2024 has been confirmed, contact the private schools manager for your badge.
Please contact Nicole Mulhausen if you have other questions.
