Sixteen Board members, State Board staff, and special guests will meet on June 26, 27, and 28 in Renton. Agenda items include strategic planning, community engagement (including a student panel), and the adoption of bylaws. The Board will also vote on a revised equity statement, the annual budget, the approval of private schools, waivers, and basic education compliance. On the final day of the meeting, new member, and Western Washington Student Representative, Castulo Gonzalez, will be sworn-in.

Sadly, this will be the last meeting for groundbreaking student Board member, Pavan Venkatakrishnan. We will highlight Pavan's career as a Board member, including his advocacy for student voting rights on the Board and perspective in the media, on SBE's blog and social media channels this week and next!
You’re invited: design a new graduation pathway option
Because of new legislation (HB 1308), the State Board of Education (SBE) must adopt official rules (state laws in the form of Washington Administrative Code) to implement the performance-based graduation pathway option. These rules will give more detail about the requirements for ensuring the safety and quality of the learning experience and the assessment criteria for determining the student has demonstrated the learning standards.
Join us for an interactive webinar on Thursday, July 20 from 12:00-1:30 p.m. with the State Board of Education’s Director of Career- and College-readiness, Linda Drake.
The performance-based pathway allows students to show what they know and can do in real-world, hands-on ways that align with their individual goals for life after high school. This student-centered pathway is intended to be customizable, with the aim of being relevant and engaging to the student. Find timelines for feedback and more on SBE's blog.
The performance-based pathway is combinable with other the ELA and math pathway options, meaning the student can do one pathway in ELA and another pathway in math. For example, a student could pass the state assessment in ELA and then focus their performance-based pathway in math. Learn more about the upcoming rulemaking process around this pathway, tools, and ways to engage so far on the performance-based pathway web page.
Share your story
Do you know of a culminating project or a student led project currently happening in a school that you think could count as this new pathway option in the future? We want to hear your stories. Please email SBE’s Director of Communications, Stephanie Davidsmeyer. She can work with you to highlight this experience and the student, and/or educator involved in the project.
