There's a class in rural Washington of kids engaging with, and appreciating math. Student intern, Indiana Hilmes, shared her positive experience in Theena Roberts' calculus class, so we visited and got an inside look. Beyond her energy and enthusiasm, Theena Roberts is inspiring to watch, relatable in her imperfections, and has managed to engage students who generally hate math. Watch the short glimpse. Special thanks to Indiana Hilmes, her peers in calculus, Theena, and Selah High School principal, Colton Monti, for letting us highlight this experience.
Relevant and engaging learning experiences are why the new performance-based pathway is being formed. Keep reading the newsletter for more information on this pathway and how it will be accessible in ELA and math. Visit the page on this topic.

It's the State Board's role to collect Basic Education information from every district to certify compliance. More and more districts are certifying each week. Find a list of the district statuses on the Basic Education page.
In case you missed it, on May 31, SBE's Viktoria Bobyleva (Basic Education Manager) presented at a webinar about this year's Basic Education compliance survey. Find the recording, PowerPoint, and more information on SBE's Basic Education page. If you're a district administrator and you haven't received a message from us about this year's survey, please reach out to Viktoria Bobyleva.
More about the new performance-based pathway
The Legislature passed House Bill 1308 creating a new performance-based graduation pathway option. Download the one-pager. View the web page.
The performance-based pathway allows students to show what they know and can do in real-world, hands-on ways that align with their individual goals for life after high school. This student-centered pathway is intended to be customizable, with the aim of being relevant and engaging to the student.
The performance-based pathway is combinable with other the ELA and math pathway options, meaning the student can do one pathway in ELA and another pathway in math. For example, a student could pass the state assessment in ELA and then focus their performance-based pathway in math. Learn more about the upcoming rulemaking process around this pathway, tools, and ways to engage so far on the performance-based pathway web page.
