Applications and all additional application materials must be received by Friday, June 16 in order for your school to be considered for approval at the June board meeting.
Although late applications will be reviewed and presented to the board for approval, note that per WAC 180-90-130:, at least 90 days before the beginning of the annual school term or period, the school “shall file with the state board of education a certificate of compliance as set forth in WAC 180-90-160.”
If your application is not ready for presentation to the board at the June meeting, your school will be considered for approval at the following meeting in August. Keep reading below to make sure that your application has been received and is not missing any key elements. See common errors below under “Provisional Approval.”
Please find information below concerning:
The State Board of Education may consider granting either full or provisional approval.
Provisional approval is typically granted for up to a year and allows schools to function as usual until any deviations are addressed. Note: Per WAC 180-90-112: (3)(a) “‘Minor deviation’ means a variance from the standards established by these regulations which represents little or no threat to the health or safety of students and school personnel, and which does not impact the ability of the school to provide an educational program which is in substantial compliance with the minimum standards set forth in WAC 180-90-160, and which, therefore, does not preclude the granting of full approval.”
These minor deviations may include:
- Missing paperwork caused by technical difficulties with the application – blank Staffing Report or Certificate of Compliance
- Missing health or fire inspection paperwork – either because of a technical issue or because inspections are pending
- For new schools, teacher hiring is in process
While it is our practice to offer provisional approval to schools, we do not offer provisional approval for two successive school years. If your school was provisionally approved for the 2022 - 2023 school year, your school will not be eligible for approval until all deviations have been rectified.
Full approval is granted to schools whose applications are complete, including any supplementary paperwork, and that certify that all minimum requirements will be met.
Nearly all the private schools have submitted approval applications for 2023 - 2024. Thank you! Each week you will find an updated list posted on the Private School Approval | SBE (wa.gov) website. After you find your school on the list, here’s how to track the status of your application:
Application Status
-
“Complete” means that your application has been received.
-
“Partial” means that you logged into the 2023 - 2024 Renewing Private School Application but did not complete it. Your application cannot be reviewed until all pages of the form are filled out and you have clicked “Submit.”
Date Reviewed
Approval Status
-
“April Full” indicates that your school was approved for operation in the 2023 - 2024 school year at the April 2023 board meeting. (If you have not yet downloaded your Certificate of Approval, see directions below.)
-
“June Full” indicates that all application materials have been reviewed and your school will be recommended for full approval to operate in the 2023 - 2024 school year at the June 2023 board meeting.
-
“Provisional” means that most of your application materials have been received and reviewed, and your school will be considered for provisional approval at the June board meeting. Please email your missing materials to the private schools manager as they become available. If we receive your materials before June 13 and your application file is complete, the status will be updated to “June Full.”
-
Other notes in this column indicate an issue with your application. In most cases, this is a problem with your upload, a blank staffing report or certificate of compliance. Please email the missing document or contact the private schools manager if you have questions.
If you do not see your school on the list, please log in and complete the 2023 - 2024 Renewing Private School Application.
Thank you to each of the many schools that submitted an 2023 - 2024 Renewing Private School Application. The board will meet in June and will review and vote to approve all remaining approval applications. See our website for a list of meeting dates.
You will be notified of your approval within two weeks of the meeting. Note that we do not email Certificates of Approval to schools. Instead, Certificates of Approval will be available for download on the private schools page.
An official State Board of Education Web Badge is available to approved private schools. The Web Badge is a small image for your website to indicate that you are an approved private school. If your school’s approval for 2023 - 2024 has been confirmed, contact the private schools manager for your badge.
