ELP Assessment Update April 11, 2023
Annual ELP testing has wrapped for the year, and we have a minute to take a breath as we look forward. Thank you for all the work you did and are doing to make this year's assessment successful. A special thanks to those of you who completed the Alternate ACCESS Field Test this year. Your support for the field test will help to improve the Alternate ACCESS for our students in the future.
Current TK Students: Between May 1 and the end of the school year, students in Transitional Kindergarten programs must complete the WIDA Screener. Students in TK programs must complete the listening and speaking domains of the WIDA Kindergarten Screener only.
Kindergarten Students in fall (not TK): Students who are not TK students but will be entering kindergarten in the fall of 2023 can also complete their WIDA K Screener beginning May 1. These students are not required to complete the screener before the end of the school year, but it is an option for them. These students will complete only the Listening and Speaking domains of the screener.
Current Kindergarten Students: Transfer students who are kindergartener s this spring and need to screen must complete all four domains of the WIDA Screener. Any kindergarten student who needs to be screened after January 1 of their kindergarten year, must complete all four domains of the WIDA Screener.
Test Administrators (TAs) who are administering the WIDA Screener can use the Score Calculator located here: https://wida.wisc.edu/assess/screener/kindergarten/calculator to generate results for students completing two or four domains.
The WIDA Store has developed a new process for ordering materials for Kindergarten Screener. Only district level staff can order materials for WIDA Kindergarten Screener. The new process is outlined below.
- Districts will place their order directly online through the WIDA Store.
- Kindergarten Screener items are located under the MODEL/Screener Assessment heading in the green Shop Products bar
- Answer "no" to the tax-exempt question.
- Select "Purchase Order" as their payment method at checkout and submit the order. This is essentially a quote. Districts won't be sending a PO.
- Districts will receive an order confirmation email.
- Districts must forward the order confirmation email to ELPAssessments@k12.wa.usfor approval.
- The state will forward the order confirmation to the WIDA Store upon approval. OSPI will review orders on Tuesdays each week through August and September and then monthly through June.
- The WIDA store will process the order and send the invoice to OSPI.
When reporting Kindergarten Screener Results for students completing only Listening and Speaking domain test, the Oral Language composite score should be used in the “Overall Score” cell in CEDARS.
Example: Student Scores: Listening 4, Speaking 3, Oral Language 3.5 should be reported as
J18: Placement Test Code: 10 - WIDA Screener (in Washington Public Schools)
J20: Placement Test Score: 4030 (Use domain scores in the order Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing)
J21: Placement Status: 5 (qualifies for program). Note: When a student does not qualify, use 6 in this cell.
J23: Overall Placement Test Score: 3.5 (use the Oral Language score for students who only complete listening and speaking).
TAs must complete The WIDA Screener for Kindergarten: Administration and Scoring training in the WIDA Secure Portal after July 1, 2022 in order to be eligible to administer (and score) the WIDA Kindergarten Screener this spring. The training year will roll over on July 1, 2023, and TAs will need to complete screener training in the Secure Portal to screen in August.
The final list of individuals who completed the truncated training has been uploaded to WAMS. It will remain available under Pre-ID until the end of the school year.
