Lauren Nguyen is a student at Career Link High School–an Open Doors program through the Highline School District. She was recently awarded a RAPSA Courage Award Scholarship during the RAPSA Spring Forum. Nominated by her instructor, Molly Ward, Lauren was one of ten students from a nationwide pool to receive the $1000 renewable scholarship. The Courage Scholarship is well-earned as Lauren has overcome great obstacles in her life to become the successful student she is today.
With the eventual goal of becoming a teacher, Lauren has started to take college classes through Career Link while she works full-time at a Montessori school. Her resiliency, hard work, and dedication to her goals both inside and outside the classroom made Lauren an excellent recipient for this scholarship. Congratulations to Lauren on this award!

Required Supports: Special Education and Section 504
Open Doors Youth Reengagement Programs must never request that a family revoke their child’s services under the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) or Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Section 504) as a condition of enrollment. State and federal law requires that all Open Doors Youth Reengagement Programs accept and provide services to students with disabilities. This includes students eligible under the IDEA and students eligible under Section 504. In addition, Open Doors Youth Reengagement Programs must evaluate, or refer for evaluation, any student they know or suspect has a disability and may need services under IDEA or Section 504. Facilitated by Liz Quayle, OSPI’s Mastery-based Learning Program Manager, and Alissa Muller, SBE’s Director of the Mastery-based Learning Collaborative, this webinar highlights the benefits of Mastery-based Learning (MBL).
MBL is an instructional approach designed to help students learn deeply and effectively. Classrooms using mastery-based learning emphasize student agency, relevance, differentiation, inclusion, and innovative assessment tools. National expert Joy Nolan, founder of New Learning Collaborative, speaks about what MBL’s impact is on equity and how you can phase this into the culture of your school. A panel of practitioners from Issaquah, Methow Valley, and Quincy School Districts shared how they’ve implemented mastery-based learning at their schools. This webinar aired on the Graduation Equity series, March 8, 2023.
