One of the Washington State SEL Standards is social awareness, meaning that the individual can take the perspective of and empathize with others from diverse backgrounds and cultures. By celebrating Black History Month and highlighting the social, political, cultural, and historical accomplishments of Black people, we ensure that students take in a broad range of perspectives that may differ from their own, which in turn allows them to build awareness of other people’s emotions, perspectives, cultures, languages, histories, identities, and abilities. Additionally, it is critically important to continuously incorporate and center culturally responsive lessons into student learning and not limit diverse perspectives to one month out of the year.
School counselors are certified educators who are uniquely trained to equitably support success for ALL students. They help all students in the areas of academic achievement, career exploration and preparation, and social-emotional development, ensuring today's students become the productive, well-adjusted adults of tomorrow.

Throughout the session, participants will be encouraged to reflect on their own role in building a system of support for SEL engagement and consider the specific needs of their students, families, and community partners. The grant application has closed but will be back next winter. In the meantime, districts who plan to apply for the next round can begin the process of choosing an appropriate curriculum for their students from the CASEL program guide. This process should include community and student engagement, as well as working with school and district staff to ensure buy-in and future fidelity in implementation.
For more information on the implementation process, see the SEL Implementation Guide and SEL iGrants FAQ and Key Points document.
