SEL and New Year's Resolutions
January is often considered the month to set new goals, commit to resolutions, or revive healthy habits. The success of achieving goals, meeting resolutions, or maintaining healthy habits is often met with disappointment, regret, and failure. Statistics show that over 90% of us fail when setting New Year’s resolutions each year. Why is that? According to experts, it is not because their goals are unattainable, but rather due to a lack of self-management (Terri Bly, 2023). How does this relate to education? Self-management is when a person applies strategies to change behavior. The influence of that change is highly dependent on their environment. When students are asked to set goals, they need self-management skills that allow them to center strengths-based, intentional approaches to reach those goals. Educators can teach self-management skills to students by modeling antecedent and consequential strategies during core instruction. For example, providing prompts that speak to the strengths of each student and applying self-instruction to redirect unfavorable behaviors. Self-Management, Washington SEL Standard 2, when partnered with the 10 TEACHING PRACTICES THAT PROMOTE SEL, is helpful to individuals in achieving goals in school and in life.
Wishing everyone success in achieving their goals!

According to CASEL, "While SEL and mental health are not the same, SEL can promote positive mental health in many ways. By promoting responsive relationships, emotionally safe environments, and skills development, SEL cultivates important “protective factors” to buffer against mental health risks. In this way, SEL is an indispensable part of student mental health and wellness, helping to improve attitudes about self and others while decreasing emotional distress and risky behaviors. SEL should be implemented as part of a system of mental wellness supports and resources that include promotion, prevention, early intervention, and treatment."

Greetings SEL Champions!!
I would like to celebrate the successes of SEL Implementation efforts across the state! In the fall of 2023, district teams convened virtually to explore, share, and learn about SEL implementation strategies during the first Peer-to-Peer Exchange. Followed by a webinar that provided educators the opportunity to gain an understanding of the relationship between mental health, behavioral health, and SEL. District teams are now meeting to share practices of incorporating SEL into multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS). If you missed these opportunities, the video and resources are on the SEL Professional Learning Network webpage.
CASEL Applauds Continued Investments in Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) - CASEL
As we move into 2024, the SEL Professional Learning Network will continue to provide relevant, engaging, and responsive learning opportunities. Research indicated that when educators are empowered to take care of themselves, students are rewarded with teachers who model kindness and problem-solving, and help navigate emotions. These are skills needed to form healthy relationships and a rewarding academic journey.
Hold a spot on your calendars for the next learning opportunities. Registration details will be provided on the webpage.

OSPI content leads are working in collaboration with the American Institutes for Research (AIR) to design representational learning materials for social emotional learning (SEL) and need the help of Washington educators.
We are seeking K-5 educators who are currently incorporating SEL into their academic instruction, specifically Health & Physical Education, the Arts, World Language, and Social Studies, and who would be willing to be videotaped in the classroom. Preliminary videotaping is planned for February with some flexibility to mitigate classroom disruptions. These videos will be used to develop a set of training materials to help other Washington educators integrate SEL into their daily instruction.
This is an opportunity for teachers and students to showcase their work and help others do the same!
If you know an elementary educator who would like to be part of this incredible work, please contact Laurie.Dils@k12.wa.us for more details.
