November meeting highlights
On November 2, the Board welcomed special guest, 2021 Classified School Employee of the Year, Nancy Baldwin to share about her work as Kelso School District’s McKinney-Vento Liaison. Watch her inspirational segment on SBE’s YouTube channel.
Members discussed legislative platform priorities and adopted the official platform for the upcoming 2023 session (graphic below). Other topics for discussion included graduation requirements alignment, system health and school climate, and basic education compliance. One private school was approved. Find the full agenda and supporting materials on SBE's meetings site.
Also at the meeting, SBE announced the winner of the “Name the SBE Seal” contest. Payton from Mrs. Shevchuck’s fourth grade class submitted “Snorkels,” and won the state-wide vote. If you don’t know, SBE is required by law to adopt an official seal. So, we did that (from the WWF). Snorkels has an Instagram account where they share about their journey through Washington schools, connecting with partners, and more.
At the November 2022 meeting, the Board adopted its 2023 legislative platform (download the PDF). It includes descriptions of requests and focuses on three priorities:
- Support the whole child to create the conditions needed for learning
- Enhance relevance and personalization of the student learning experience
- Expand and strengthen opportunities for powerful learning
What does this mean?
The Board's requests to the legislature reflect these focus priorities. This session, the Board may sign in "pro" and testify on behalf of bills that promote these focus priorities. We will keep our web page up-to-date as session progresses: sbe.wa.gov/waleg.
