It was another historic meeting this September as student member Pavan Venkatakrishnan was elected to the Board’s Executive Committee (it provides guidance on the Board’s agenda and oversight of the budget). The Executive Committee is now comprised of Mary Fertakis, Harium Martin-Morris, Pavan Venkatakrishnan, Bill Kallappa, and Kevin Wang. Pavan will be the first student member of this committee.
The Board also received Government-to-Government training from special guests, Dr. Michael Smith (Rochester), Willie Frank III and Hanford McCloud (Nisqually Tribe), Bill Kallappa (SBE chair), Washington’s 2022 Teacher of the Year, Jerad Koepp (North Thurston), and Representative Debra Lekanoff (40th District).

If you weren't able to catch a listening session, please consider taking our survey on graduation requirements. We will present your feedback to the Board. Learn more about the recommendations before taking the survey: Video.
We're looking for a name for the State Board's Instagram seal. Students can submit their ideas, or educators can do this for them by emailing sbe@k12.wa.us. You can use this coloring sheet (but it isn't required). Special thanks to students who have already submitted!
The student (or class) that wins the final name (state-wide vote, and SBE committee selection) gets:
- A pizza party for their class (courtesy of our Executive Director)
- A visit to a classroom of their choice from State Board delegates, and the seal of course (whenever timing is not disruptive)
- A feature of your classroom in the State Board's newsletter, and highlights across all official social media channels
- Bragging rights that you named the official SBE seal
On our visit, we'd love to learn more about what your students are experiencing at school. We can also share about our state's education system and how state policy works. The deadline for our seal's naming contest was September 30, but we are extending it to October 7. Details can be found here: sbe.wa.gov/seal. Share our posts about this on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and/or LinkedIn.
