ELP Assessment Update September 12, 2022
It's mid September and school is back in full swing. I hope you all are experiencing the joy and excitement of the early days of school and autumn as we work our way through the bulk of ELP screening season. We are here to support you as always, please don't hesitate to reach out if we can help in any way or if you have suggestions for how we can do better. It's the start of another great school year.
With the change to Kindergarten screening requirements, some districts are experiencing unexpected errors when reporting the Kindergarten screening score in their student information system (SIS). Where zero must be selected for the writing and reading domains, no zero option is available. While OSPI has worked to make clear the requirements for different data elements to SIS vendors, we are unable to make changes to SIS systems. This is a problem districts or ESDs will need to resolve with their SIS vendors.
With the change in policy regarding students arriving from other states with WIDA scores, many districts have asked for a list of states that are a part of the WIDA Consortium. OSPI has developed a list and included it on the ELP Assessments page under Resources.
Test administrators are required to complete training annually for the WIDA Screener and for the WIDA ACCESS assessments. The training requirements include viewing the training modules as well as passing the associated quizzes. Tests may not be administered by TAs who have not completed training since July 1.
Any training completed after July 1, 2022 counts towards TA training for the 2022-23 school year regardless of the school year it is associated with in the WIDA Secure Portal. Districts may need to take special care to ensure they are looking at training completion after July 1.
If you are in need of a Braille or Large Print Screener, please reach out to Leslie Huff (Leslie.huff@k12.wa.us) or the ELP Assessments inbox (ELPAssessments@k12.wa.us) for support.
Also, if you know you will need Braille or Large Print annual assessments, OSPI will need to collect this information by October. Please email ELPAssessments as soon as you know the following information:
- SSID:
- Grade level:
- School:
- DAC Name:
- Mailing Address:
- Type of Assessment needed (i.e., Large print, Uncontracted, Contracted)
If you are experiencing difficulty with screening a student whose disabilities limit their access to the assessment, please reach out to Leslie Huff for support in addressing accessibility barriers.
Lunch with Leslie is an opportunity on Mondays at noon for districts to hear updates from OSPI, ask questions about WIDA assessments, or find out how other districts are approaching testing processes. This is a casual opportunity for collaboration and information sharing and any district staff involved with ELP assessments is welcome to attend. Your colleagues involved in WIDA Alternate ACCESS testing are especially encouraged to join on September 19.
