Welcome back to school!
I hope this newsletter finds you excited about the return of students to school. This is another opportunity to intentionally embed social emotional learning into the school environment. The research tells us that when the classroom teacher delivers the SEL skills in an environment that is safe, welcoming, and embraces culture as a strength, not only do we see improved self-esteem, less bullying, and increased academic success, but we also see less teacher burnout. On top of that, we see that emotional distress is reduced
Students and teachers alike need this. SEL is the way to make that happen.
If you would like more information about SEL, you can go through the SEL Online Module. It is free for all. You need only set up an account to access any of the following 7 segments of the SEL online Module:
- Introduction to SEL
- Embedding SEL Schoolwide
- Creating Professional Culture Based on SEL
- Integrating SEL into Culturally Responsive Classrooms
- Trauma-informed Practice and SEL
- Identifying and Selecting Evidence-Based SEL Programs
- SEL Considerations for COVID-19 Context
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Wishing you a wonderful start to the new school year!

School districts can now apply to receive up to $30,000 to use for the purchase of evidence-based SEL curriculum.
Some things for districts to make note of are:
- Prior to applying, districts must choose a curriculum they plan to purchase and be able to provide the exact cost for the materials on their application.
- Districts who do not already have SEL curriculum in place will be prioritized to receive the grant.
- Districts who have are eligible for high poverty allocations will also be prioritized to receive the grant.
- Districts must read and adopt the Washington State SEL Standards. Participating districts agree to participate in a post-grant survey conducted by OSPI.
- Districts who applied for the grant previously but were not awarded are able to reapply.
- Districts can access the SEL Network for collaborative resources and technical assistance
More information about the grant can be found on the SEL page of the OSPI website (link).
There will be an informational webinar hosted by the OSPI SEL Team held on Tuesday, September 13th at 11:00 AM. The link can be found here: Webinar Link
We would love to see lesson plans, hear about your strategies, practices, and ideas that you use with your students or staff to develop the competency of Self-Awareness. Our hope is to share these with others as we get questions and as we work on providing professional development. We know there is great work happening in SEL all over this state and our hope is to collaborate together to share these ideas.
Please do not to send anything that has a copyright because our goal is to share these with others. Thank you in advance for your collaboration!
