Hello Readers,
As the last full month of the school year arrives, I would like to thank all educational staff for supporting our students through this challenging year. It is fitting that May is Mental Health Awareness Month. The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) writes, “While SEL and mental health are not the same, SEL can promote positive mental health in many ways. By promoting responsive relationships, emotionally safe environments, and skills development, SEL cultivates important “protective factors” to buffer against mental health risks. (SEL and Mental Health, 2022)
We know that trauma has impacted not only our students, but also the adults as well. It is important to be able to have the opportunity to talk about this. It is also important to listen to our students and ourselves and provide the care and time necessary to heal. Dr. Bre Haizlip, a licensed therapist says, either you transform your trauma, or you transfer it onto others. Let’s transform!
Here are some resources:
- OSPI provides numerous resources on the Behavioral Health Resources website
- The Washington SEL Online Module is free to access and contains valuable information regarding SEL and one segment of the module is focused on Trauma informed Practice and SEL. This module is geared toward educators.
- A Committee for Children Blog, Promoting Mental Health through SEL includes good information and some additional resources
For High School:
Wishing you a healthy month.
As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions about SEL.

The Social Emotional Learning (SEL) team at Washington Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) is partnering with American Institutes for Research to hold community listening sessions to learn how people view available SEL instruction and supports. What we learn from the sessions will help to guide improvements to professional learning available to educators to ensure more equitable, effective SEL supports statewide. Please use the links below to learn more and sign up to participate in a session:

The OSPI Social Emotional Learning Curriculum Grant will be open for another cycle of district applicants beginning in August 2022. The SEL Curriculum Grant will award districts up to $30,000 to purchase evidence-based SEL Curriculum.
A stipulation in the application process is that districts must know which curricula they will purchase and what the approximate estimated cost will be. As was the case in the first grant cycle, districts will be required to choose an evidence-based curriculum from the CASEL Program Guide (link).
Districts can also consult this document from the Wallace Foundation: Navigating SEL From the Inside Out (link).
We encourage districts who are interested in the SEL Curriculum Grant to begin their search for a suitable curriculum now, so they are ready for the application process.
For any questions or concerns, please contact Ben Everett.
