In Washington state schools, some jobs are harder to fill than others

Seattle Times staff reporter
News coverage and government officials have pointed to labor shortages made worse by the pandemic, and even warned of a mass exodus of teachers. Forty percent of superintendents around the country surveyed by the newsmagazine Education Week reported their staffing shortages were “severe” or “very severe.”

Dena Simmons once said, "No one really learns well when teachers are stressed and burned out, which is why I say a stressed and burned out teaching force is an equity issue. If we believe in equity and if we want our students to do well, we have to ensure our educators are doing well too." It's extremely hard to strike the right balance as educators are asked to go above and beyond and also apply self-care. How can we set up our systems so that educators know that they're valued? We're bringing you social justice educator Dwayne Reed to talk about his ideas on how our schools can authentically in engage educator and staff wellness. We'll also have with us Maike & Associates and Highline Public Schools to talk about the supports they've innovated for educator care in Washington during the pandemic and hits and misses from their work, as well as thoughts behind it. We'll be offering free Clock Hours for participation.

Workforce Secondary Traumatic Stress
SHB 1363 (2021) acknowledges the significant toll Secondary Traumatic Stress has on educators, and subsequently students, and focuses on the adoption of policy and procedures so that districts and schools can take meaningful steps in supporting their staff’s health and well-being.
Certificated and classified staff, like many others in helping professions, tend to experience STS at greater rates than those in other professions due to the persistent exposure to and expectation of caretaking for students with emotionally painful experiences. Ensuring the wellbeing of educators is a critical component to sustaining an effective workforce and promoting student outcomes. By implementing policy through strategic use of professional learning and a continuous improvement process, districts and schools can reduce staff turnover, increase student outcomes, and model healthy behaviors for the entire school community.
