This message was sent to all district and ESD superintendents, as well as tribal compact and charter school leaders, at 4 pm on Monday, January 31.
Dear Principals:
Registration is open now for the COVID-19 Student Survey; impacts and implications on student learning and well-being. We encourage the administration of this optional, anonymous survey for students in grades 6–12 to share with school, district, and state leaders how they feel about school, their mental and physical health and well-being, and more.
The survey, a collaboration between OSPI and the University of Washington, aims to provide schools with critical and timely data about students’ thoughts, feelings, and behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic. Questions in the survey are meant to be actionable, providing you with information to support implementation of school-wide or individual supports for your students.
The free survey is available in six languages: English, Spanish, Russian, Ukrainian, Vietnamese, and Somali. It will be administered electronically to students in grades 6–12 and is estimated to take 15–25 minutes to complete. We encourage administering the survey in a classroom setting, but it can be taken remotely as well. This tool will provide you with actionable results you can consider pointing to in school improvement plans, reengagement plans, grant proposals, and other planning for student learning and well-being recovery and acceleration.
On February 1, the survey links will go live and be ready for administration to students. The survey window is scheduled to run from February 1–28. Schools will receive anonymized results in April, and statewide results will be available in late spring/early summer. Register between now and February 24.
This is a different survey than the Healthy Youth Survey (HYS), which many schools took in the fall. This survey focuses more on school experiences, emotional well-being, and support during the pandemic. There are very few questions that are asked on both surveys.
Registration, questions, and additional information are available on the COVID-19 Student Survey webpage. If you have any questions about the survey, please send an email to Emily Maughan at emily.maughan@k12.wa.us.
