SBE held its latest Board meeting January 19-20, and discussed private schools, graduation requirements, charter schools, legislative session, and more. The Board also welcomed new members (photographed left to right) Dr. Angela Griffin, Brooke Brown, and Dr. Dana Riley Black. Dr. Susana Reyes was reappointed, and Ryan Brault was re-elected—both to fulfill additional terms. Find documents from the meeting and links to TVW’s live stream on SBE’s Simbli page.
Graduation Requirements – The Mastery-based Learning Work Group submitted the Washington Profile of a Graduate (pictured below) to the Board (and report to the Legislature) this past December. Senate Bill 5249 says the Board may develop recommendations to align graduation requirements to this Profile.

In developing the recommendations, the Board began discussing whether changes to the core subject area requirements, flexible credits, and noncredit requirements should be made and what those changes should be, among other ideas about the requirements. The Board will connect with partners and community members to help inform Board recommendations. If Board plans to develop rules or legislative priorities for the 2023 legislative session, draft recommendations will need to be developed by this summer.
Private Schools – the Board heard an update on annual reporting and private school approval, and a summary of the actions staff have taken in response to recent concerns about private schools and COVID-19 state safety regulations.
Charter Schools – The Board was briefed on the fifth annual report on the performance of the charter schools. In law, SBE, in collaboration with the Washington Charter School Commission, must include a recommendation regarding whether the legislature should authorize the establishment of additional charter public schools. The draft summary report has information on the performance of the charter schools and draft recommendations for the Governor's and Legislature's consideration.
Legislative Session – Staff gave an update on the status of the Board’s legislative requests, what to expect for the hybrid/remote session, committee membership, and other updates. Maddy Thompson (Senior Policy Advisor at the Governor’s office also provided an update, and Val Terre (the Governor’s Budget Assistant) updated attendees on the Governor's budget proposal. See the Board’s 2022 legislative platform for additional information.
Upcoming Board Meeting
