Does your program have a Student Handbook? We’d love to see it!
A Marysville Open Doors program is seeking to develop a Student Handbook and has requested to see what other Open Doors programs have created.
Help OSPI to curate a collection of samples! Please send your existing student handbooks via email to Mandy Paradise, and we will share them to inquiring programs.
Research: Education and Career Planning in High School
This study may be of interest to Open Doors Youth Reengagement Case Managers and Instructors. It illustrates how impactful ongoing education and career planning can be for students, especially when it comes to High School & Beyond Plans and planning.
This study examines the behaviors associated with the transition to college. Students who developed an education or career plan upon first entering high school were no more or less likely to engage in college prep or college going behaviors than students who did not develop a plan. However, for students who received support from a teacher or a parent to develop their plan and for students who met with an adult in school to review the plan at least once a year, developing a plan was significantly associated with several college-going behaviors.

Additional OSSI Funding Available
The Office of System and School Improvement (OSSI) is happy to announce that additional funding is now available to all schools with existing grants in form packages 871, 873 and 874. Notifications were sent last week to district personnel via iGrants and to building principals via email. The deadline to create a budget revision to access this extra money is Monday, February 28, 2022. After that date, any unapplied for additional funds will be redistributed again.
Mid-Year SIP Progress Monitoring Due Jan 28
Are you an Open Doors program identified for School Improvement? The answer is yes if you are 1) receiving funds through iGrant form packages 871, 873 and/or 874, or 2) are identified through OSSI as a Comprehensive or Comprehensive Graduation Rate support eligible location. If so, your Mid-Year SIP Progress Monitoring Review needs to be uploaded in SharePoint by January 28, 2022.
Remember that regular progress monitoring is best practice for SIP implementation and highly recommended.
Post-resident Youth – Dropout Prevention System Examination
The 2021 Legislature directed OSPI to examine Washington's dropout prevention, intervention, and retrieval system, as well as recommend new or modified dropout reengagement requirements and practices that will promote credit earning and high school completion by youth and post-resident youth. OSPI focused this analysis on Washington's statewide dropout reengagement system: Open Doors. This report includes three recommendations by OSPI to promote better outcomes for post-resident youth and all youth who engage in the state's youth reengagement programs.
Authorizing legislation: House Bill 1295 (2021)
UPDATE: Safety Net Survey
Safety Net funding is available to local education agencies (LEAs) that demonstrate need for additional special education funding. Applicants must show need beyond state and federal funding already available to the LEA. The Legislature requires OSPI to annually survey LEAs about their satisfaction with the Safety Net process. The survey is used to consider feedback from LEAs to improve the Safety Net process.
