All pandemic long, people have been talking about how schools need to take urgent steps to fix cracks and close chasms in public education systems to make learning more meaningful and equitable. In Washington, a work group of educators, legislators and other community members has been asked to redefine what it means to be a life- and career-ready high school graduate before the end of the year.
This definition will go beyond grades: Can students show how they are able to think critically while working on a team? Or how well they adapt to changes and challenges? Can they confidently and competently balance a budget and collaborate with people who look or think differently than them? Read more from the Seattle Times.
Special thanks to Engagement Editor, Jenn Smith for writing this piece!

Students are looking for real-world experiences to help them make big decisions about their future, but they are often unsure how to manage school, work and life obligations at the same time. Career Connect Washington is a statewide effort to connect young people with on-the-job experiences and relevant classroom learning. These programs vary in intensity, depending on whether a young person is exploring a career path or ready to get started. “Earn and learn” programs are available in multiple fields, and there are also support services to help.
Students, parents, teachers and counselors all have access to them at https://careerconnectwa.org/directory/. For more information, email info@careerconnectwa.org.
