The governor's proclamation language was posted March 15, 2021. It references the responsibility of the school district to ensure students have the opportunity to attend in-person learning if they desire. It does not include language or requirements specific to each individual school.
For more information about the implementation of this proclamation, please see the OSPI Guidance for Reopening School Buildings in Spring 2021.
The newly passed 2020-21 Graduation Requirements Emergency Waiver (GREW) will be available for some current seniors (Classes of 2020 and 2021).
Given that we know school staff have been anxiously waiting for this information, but we have limited staffing capacity to meet everyone’s specific needs, we’ve created the following opportunities to connect with OSPI and SBE staff directly to learn more and ask questions…
- The OSPI & SBE will be hosting “GREW Office Hours” on Wednesdays from 1:00-2:00 pm until 4/28 (except for 3/31). Each hour will start with a quick overview of the GREW and then as much time as possible for Q&A.
- Registration is not required. Anyone can use this link to Join the Zoom Meeting and use the Passcode "Join" to come whenever is convenient.
- Each week, we’ll compile unanswered/unanswerable questions and work to provide a response at the next week’s office hour.
On 3/31, the GREW updates and other information relevant to supporting seniors’ transition will be covered at this year’s last free OSPI-WSAC Webinar from 1:00-2:30 pm (this is in lieu of the Office Hour).
Further guidance from OSPI will be sent out in April.
From the SBE:
We invite you to provide your valuable feedback by completing our Graduation Pathway Options Follow Up Survey (5 minutes or less) using the following link. The survey is intended to collect feedback from high school and district staff, current high school students, and families of current high school students.

We are excited to share we have just published our spring statewide assessment waiver request and supporting materials.
OSPI's proposed student assessment plan for spring 2021 aims to drastically reduce testing burdens on students, families, schools, and school districts across Washington while also fulfilling the need to obtain precise, representative estimates of students’ academic proficiency levels.
The following grades and content areas will be assessed:
- Grades 3 and 7: English Language Arts (Smarter Balanced and WA-AIM)
- Grades 5 and 10: Mathematics (Smarter Balanced and WA-AIM)
- Grade 8: Science (WCAS and WA-AIM)

Weekly direct personal contact must be an interactive communication between the student and the certificated teacher; the parent may be involved in the contact.
- Each weekly contact must relate to the WSLP goals and courses, so just a “Hi, how was your weekend?” does not suffice.
- A week is defined as Sunday through Saturday.
-
Methods include in person, email, phone, text, and/or synchronous/asynchronous digital communication.
For Weekly Contact documentation, The basic elements are:
- Date
- Certificated ALE teacher who made the contact
- Method of contact
- Content
The method of contact can be noted via:
- Class attendance (this can be in a single class attendance log, or on the student’s WC log in their folder)
- Phone log
- Contact log checklist
- Other narrative or table form
The content can be noted as:
- Attendance in a class / Instruction
- WSLP goals
- Some teachers write the minimum to mention activities toward WSLP goals, others write paragraphs.
The focus for the documentation should always be to best communicate information to the teacher, student, and family in a way that supports the student’s engagement and success in meeting their learning goals.
