PARAEDUCATOR BOARD NEWSLETTER

FROM THE SEPTEMBER BOARD MEETING

The Board recently held its September 26 to 27 meeting in Spokane, WA and approved or adopted many important policies.

A reminder that background information and presentation materials for this meeting are on our website.

In September, the Board:

  • Supported the following motion: paraeducators who hold a paraeducator certificate or an educator who holds a Title 181 certificate, may review a paraeducator's professional growth plan (PGP), Tab 5;
  • Supported the following motion: continuing education credit hours may be used to renew multiple paraeducator certificates as long as those hours are earned during the validity period of the specific certificate being renewed, Tab 6;
  • Supported the following motion: paraeducators may renew their certificate with any continuing education credit hour that meets existing clock hour standards, Tab 7; and
  • Supported the following motion: paraeducators will have the same policy as Title 181 when filing for renewal and when when trying to renew an expired paraeducator certificate, Tab 8.

The Board will review the above for official rule adoption at a future meeting.

Annotated actions provide Board response to agenda items. Official minutes will be reviewed and acted upon at the next Board meeting, November 28.

UNTIL THE END OF OCTOBER:

THE ETS PARAPRO IS FREE

ETS and Prometric are piloting a new platform for the ParaPro test through October 31, 2018. This pilot includes an option for candidates to take the assessment utilizing a remote-proctor feature. This allows test-takers to complete the ParaPro test remotely. If you are interested in taking the ParaPro test remotely, please review the information in the attached letter.

Additionally, testing sites currently offering the ParaPro test are encouraged to participate in this pilot by having candidates test using the new platform. Administrators will follow the same procedures as they currently use, they will have the test-takers utilize the new platform instead of the existing one. For more information, please review the attached letter.
