ALE Administrators Meeting

Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make the 2018 ALE Administrators Meeting a success! The engaging conversation, questions, and feedback was greatly appreciated. If you have any follow-up questions about the event please contact the Alternative Learning Department or Brad Sprague, WALA Executive Director.

Behavior and Discipline in ALE

The Graduation A Team Effort (GATE) department at OSPI presented on rethinking discipline during their October Webinar.

The Alternative Learning Department has recorded a follow-up video on how the topic relates to an ALE setting. Please take the opportunity to watch the presentations and stay tuned for a session at the WALA spring conference on behavior and discipline.

Welcome Joy Walton Kawasaki

Photo of Joy

Join us in welcoming Joy Walton Kawasaki to OSPI as the new School Choice and Enrollment Options Manager.

Prior to coming to OSPI, Joy served for 10 years as Administrator for Olympia Regional Learning Academy (ORLA) with the Olympia School District.  ORLA is one of Washington’s sentinel alternative learning settings, offering a set of flexible and innovative learning programs, including a K-6 Montessori, a parent-partnership program, and on online academy, to students in grades K-12.  Joy was a leader in the design, development, and implementation of this still-thriving program.

Prior to starting ORLA, Joy was the principal at Olympia’s Avanti High School for 7 years, served as assistant principal at Black Hills HS in Tumwater, and director and instructor at Bayview High School on Whidbey Island. She also has 10 years teaching experience, primarily in alternative settings.

We could not be more excited to have her join us!

WALA Pre-Conference Sessions

WALA is hosting its 43rd annual spring conference at Skamania Lodge March 1-3 and, for the first time, they are adding pre-conference sessions! Participants have the option of choosing one of three different pre-conference sessions at no additional charge. Pre-conference sessions include:

  1. Social-Emotional Learning with Ron Hertel. Participants choosing this session should also plan to attend the follow-up session during the regular conference. Check the conference agenda for the date and time of the follow-up session.
  2. Project-Based Learning with Educurious. Participants choosing this session will receive a free project-based learning module.
  3. Youth Mental Health First Aid with ESD 112. Participants who fully complete this session in addition to a follow-up session during the regular conference agenda will receive a certification and resource book. Please note, you must complete both the pre-conference and the additional session in the regular conference agenda to receive the certification. Check the conference agenda for the date and time of the follow-up session.

These pre-conference sessions are a wonderful opportunity to expand your learning and professional development. We strongly encourage attending one of these sessions, as there is no additional cost above and beyond the regular conference registration fee. If you are interested in attending one of these sessions, please sign-up as soon as possible by contacting Brad Sprague, WALA Executive Director.

WALA Survey

The Washington Association for Learning Alternatives (WALA) sent out a survey in December with the intention of gathering data and information to inform the association's support for programs. Please complete their survey if you haven't already. Contact Brad Sprague, WALA Executive Director, or Mark Clements, WALA President with any questions you may have.
