The Equity and Civil Rights Office at OSPI is providing a two-day training regarding civil rights protections and obligations in Washington public schools, open to all district and school employees. The training is separated into three parts over two days, with separate registration for each.


Civil Rights Training

  • Recognize civil rights issues and discover legal obligations and strategies to protect students from discrimination and harassment
  • Learn how to investigate and resolve discrimination complaints
  • Self-assess compliance with key civil rights requirements
  • Learn strategies for identifying and addressing potential disparities in discipline and course and program enrollment

Section 504 Training

  • Understand the process to identify and evaluate students under Section 504
  • Discuss suggestions for developing and implementing Section 504 plans
  • Using real-world scenarios, discuss common pitfalls and hot topics, including students with health conditions, manifestation determinations, dietary accommodations, extracurricular activities, etc.

Who should attend? Section 504 coordinators | School and district administrators | School counselors | School nurses | Any other staff involved in the Section 504 process


Title IX Athletics Training

  • Understand how to use the Title IX Three-Part Test to assess athletic participation
  • View sample tools and templates to assist districts in evaluating Title IX compliance
  • Identify strategies to accommodate student interests in athletics
  • Explain Title IX requirements regarding equal treatment and benefits for girls' and boys' athletic programs, including the factors that each district must evaluate
