Ursula Burns

The Tacoma Housing Authority has forged new community partnerships to deliver support of retail space with a focus on providing resiliency to the displacement that’s occurred in the community over the past decade.
Their Design the Hill project commenced as the community was starting to see signs of gentrification and wanted to do everything possible to limit resident housing and business displacement by planning for and enacting actions that supported community resiliency and anti-displacement in the Hilltop neighborhood
Tacoma Housing Authority, its planning partners, and the community agreed on some critical goals, as memorialized in the final plan:
- Create housing that is affordable to households 0-60% AMI
- Develop a community priority plan which will prioritize applications from current Hilltop residents and those who have been displaced or are at risk of displacement from the neighborhood
- Providing commercial and retail space, with a focus on affirmative marketing and supporting small, locally-owned businesses.
Consulting with the Tacoma-Pierce County Black Collective (the Collective), the City of Tacoma’s small business development services, and SpaceWorks, the following process offers local businesses an opportunity to locate in 775 square feet of commercial space at Housing Hilltop South. Submissions must be received by February 23, 2025. For more information, please go to https://www.tacomahousing.org/solicitations

Washington state families leave a lot of money on the table each year for post-secondary education and training programs--college and vocational programs both qualify for financial aid.

Washington College Grant (WA Grant) gives more money to more people for more kinds of education and training beyond high school. WA Grant is not reserved for valedictorians or athletes—it is available to all eligible Washington residents, including undocumented students. If you meet the program and income requirements, you have money waiting for you. WA Grant can help you access many types of education and training:
Public and private colleges and universities. Workforce and training programs. Approved apprenticeship programs where you can earn money while learning a trade.
WA Grant amounts vary based on income, family size, and program cost. This year, an eligible student from a family of four with income of $78,500 or less per year can get a full award. What does that mean? For example, public college tuition would likely be free for a family with three children and a single parent making $37 per hour. For middle-income families, grant amounts are lower. But even someone from a family of four making up to $120,500 per year can get some money to help pay for college or training—and income limits will be even higher for 2025-26.
Students and families can use the financial aid calculator to estimate their potential WA Grant award, but the only way to know for sure how much you can get is to apply for financial aid. Applications for the 2025-26 academic year are now open.
WA Grant helps make college or job training affordable. Learn more at WAgrant.org
