Alfred & Isabell Masters
Did you know Alfred Masters was the first African American to be enlisted in the United States Marine Corps? On June 25, 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued Executive Order 8802; the elimination of racial discrimination from federal departments, agencies, the military, and from private defense contractors. Masters was sworn in on June 1st, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma at 12:01 a.m. with his wife Isabell by his side.
The initial group of Black USMC recruits were not immediately trained because separate, segregated facilities had not been completed. These and subsequent recruits were organized into the 51st Composite Defense Battalion, a static artillery unit intended to hold land against attack.
An educator by profession, his wife Isabell Masters taught in California, New York, Nevada and Kansas during her career. Her father was of African American and German descent. Masters started her own political party, called the Looking Back Party - and was a candidate for U.S. President during the 1984, 1992, 1996, 2000 and 2004 presidential elections. She also ran as a Republican. In 2000, she was a write-in candidate in Kansas alongside George W. Bush and Al Gore. Her five presidential campaigns are the most for any woman in U.S. history. She passed away 2011 but is one of eleven Black women who have run for the U.S. presidency.
