The first Black woman to earn a Ph.D. in Psychology, Inez Beverly Prosser did extensive research on the effect of segregated schools versus non-segregated schools on African American students. She was passionate about finding the best way to foster and educate young black students. She was also one of the first to take a vested interest in the mental health of African American children subjected to racism.

The Legal Counsel for Youth and Children (LCYC) ,YMCA of Greater Seattle and MDC. We are working together to create the Youth Engagement Team in Pierce County, which will play a critical role in supporting young people in our community. This project will be working with youth (12-17) that are experiencing housing instability through a multidisciplinary team of legal, housing and mental health support.
As part of this initiative, LCYC is currently seeking to fill a vital attorney position based in Pierce County. This role will involve direct representation, community outreach, and education for young people, focusing on those experiencing housing instability. The attorney will also work closely with various community partners to identify and address systemic barriers to eliminating youth homelessness.

United Way of King County is recruiting a Public Policy Analysis Intern for the academic year 2024-2025. The intern’s focus will be on policy analysis and advocacy. Grad students help identify and prioritize issues for advocacy, conduct background research on priority policy issues, and develop background papers used in advocacy, policy development, policy analysis, coalition building, and constituent communication. The intern may also have the opportunity to participate in BIPOC community advocacy grantmaking and/or grant administration processes, systems change-related research or BIPOC community advocacy projects.
This will be a position that receives a stipend.

Claudia Alexander (1959-2015) was an African American project scientist with NASA who specialized in geophysics and planetary science. She was heavily involved in the Rosetta Project, a mission designed to, essentially, catch a comet and land a probe on it. Alexander was also the last project manager for the Galileo mission to Jupiter, and it is due to her work that we know so much about Jupiter and its moons.
