Featured in the 2007 film Pride is African American swimming coach, Jim Ellis. He introduced competitive swimming to inner city youth and their families.
A native of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, Ellis learned to swim in a Highland Park pool shortly after the pool was integrated. He later became a lifeguard there in spite of the racial tensions that existed at the time. Swimming competitively during high school and while attending Cheyney State, the first HBCU in the nation, Ellis became a math teacher and founded the PDR (Philadelphia Department of Recreation, or Pride, Determination, Resilience) swim team - one of the few predominantly Black swim teams largely for intercity youth. He coached the team from 1971 to 2008.
Many talented swimmers, like Michael Norment, came to swim for Ellis' team because of his strong reputation as a coach. Norment was the first Black swimmer on the U.S. national team and a swim coach himself. PDR is a nationally recognized competitive swim team and model for urban swim programs around the country. Over one hundred of his swimmers have attended college on scholarship and competed in U.S. Olympic Swim Team trials.
In May 2007, Ellis received the President's Award from the International Swimming Hall of Fame, was named to the 2015 "30 Most Influential People In Swimming Over the Past 30 Years," list by USA Swimming and Speedo and inducted into the 2019 American Swimming Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
As of 2023, his aquatics program has remains open and active. Although still referenced as the Philadelphia Department of Recreation Swim Team, it is no longer directly associated with the Department.

Dual credit: Get a head start on college
Want to get a big head start on college? High school students can earn high school and college credit at the same time with dual credit programs. Students who earn college credit are more likely to graduate high school, enroll in college, and complete college degrees.
Each dual credit program is a little different, but there are three main ways you can earn college credit while in high school:
- Credit by passing a college course:
-
College in the High School provides college courses that are taught at the high school, by high school teachers, with college curriculum, college textbooks, and oversight by college faculty and staff.
-
Running Start students enroll in courses taught on-campus at Washington’s community and technical colleges, and at select four-year colleges. Some schools offer remote learning courses.
Not all dual credit programs are available at all high schools. Talk to your counselor for more information. Visit the WSAC website for more resources to plan your future college or career pathway.
