2023 Legislative Update Week 11

The 2023 legislative session in Olympia is underway and being held in-person and remotely.

With House of Origin cutoff last week, many bills have been put down. For those remaining, the committee hearing/pubic testimony process begins again but this time in the opposite chamber. There is still important to express your concerns however another policy cutoff occurs Wednesday, March 29th.

One of our priority bills this year is the expansion of the Working Connections Child Care Program because quality care is out of reach for many families. This week, the bill passed to House Appropriations, a fiscal committee, for discussion about the cost of expansion.

Sadly, several bills increasing consumer protections for renters have died. In a 2017 University of Washington study, 46% of Black Washingtonians pay more than 1/3rd of their income towards rent. The report also notes Black adults in Pierce and King counties make up a disproportionate number of eviction filings. These bills were trying to address rent increases, excessive rent increases, and evictions.

Will authorize the Department of Corrections (DOC) to supervise persons granted
