Founded in December 1935 by Mary McLeod Bethune, the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) has a history of efforts to improve the conditions for Black women nationally and internationally. Their most notable efforts included regularly visiting the White House to push for more Black female administrators in upper-level government positions and admittance of Black women in the U.S. Army. Although the ranks were segregated, by 1942 Black women were admitted into the Women’s Army Corps.
As World War II ended, the NCNW encouraged the United States join the United Nations and actively worked for voter and education rights for Black people. They also lobbied for women's rights, federal aid for education, establishment of national a health-care system and fair employment practices to end racial discrimination in the workplace.
Today, the National Council of Negro Women, Incorporated continues in its mission to empower women of African descent, their families and community. Coordinating activities with affiliates in 34 states, the council also runs four research and policy centers addressing the health, educational and economic needs of African American women. They are the organizers of the annual National Black Family Reunion.
