In July 2020, Lt. j.g. Madeline Swegle made history as the US Navy’s first Black female fighter pilot. After completing tactical carrier qualifications last year in Texas, she is now stationed at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Washington.
Swegle is a 2017 Naval Academy graduate and the first Black woman who has been certified for TACAIR missions meaning she could go on to fly fighters such as the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, EA-18G Growler or F-35C Joint Strike Fighter planes.
The first African American female pilot in Navy history was Brenda Robinson. In 1977, she was one of only ten women accepted into the Navy’s Aviation Officer Candidate School - one year after the Naval Academy started accepting women. In 1981, she became the first Black female Navy pilot ever and the first Black woman to earn Wings of Gold.
Shawna Rochelle Kimbrell became the first African American female fighter pilot in the U.S. Air Force in 1999.
