Charles Quinton Brown Jr. is the first African-American to be appointed as chief of staff of the United States Air Force -  the first African-American to lead any branch of the United States Armed Forces. Appointed August 2020, the four-star general is the 22nd chief of staff of the Air Force responsible for the organization, training and equipping of 685,000 active-duty, Guard, Reserve and civilian forces serving in the U.S. and overseas.

Brown, who sports the nickname “CQ”, is from San Antonio, Texas and began his military career in 1985. Graduating the Air Force Reserve Officers Training Corps as a second lieutenant, he holds a master’s degree in aeronautical science and is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, the first intercollegiate African American fraternity. Brown is an F-16 fighter flight instructor and squadron command pilot with over 2,900 flight hours including 130 hours in combat during Desert Storm. He is also an honorary Tuskegee Airman.
