Dr. Martin Luther King's 'I Have a Dream' speech has become the banner for the Civil Rights Movement, but on February 4, 1968, just two months before his assassination, Dr. King delivered what has long been considered one of his most important, but lesser-known sermons of his legacy - “The Drum Major Instinct.”
Within his 40-minute sermon, Dr. King argues that human aspiration is the root of many of the world’s problems; “a desire to be out front, a desire to lead the parade, a desire to be first” and the need “to be important, to surpass others, to achieve distinction.” In sermonic fashion, Dr. King suggests an alternative conception of civic virtue where success is focused on measuring inclusivity, commitment to principle and servant leadership.
“The Drum Major Instinct” sermon was delivered at a time when Dr. King was beginning to shift his attention to deeper issues behind the racial disparity related to inequality and poverty and when he was organizing a second march on Washington D.C. as part of the Poor People’s Campaign. Towards the end of the sermon, as if he foretells his untimely death, Dr. King spends time talking about how he hoped to be remembered; not for his awards and achievements, but for his service to others.
