SR 520 directional closures starting this weekend

In this update:

Be prepared for a series of SR 520 directional closures starting this weekend

To create the framework for a new lid over SR 520, crews will install large concrete beams, called girders, over the highway in Montlake. Hoisting these beams into place will require four weekend closures of SR 520 – two in each direction. Watch our latest video to learn more about this process.

We’ll start the series of closures this weekend as crews close eastbound SR 520 between Montlake Boulevard and the Eastside.

Closure details

From 11 p.m., Friday, Jan. 29, to 5 a.m., Monday, Feb. 1, crews will close:

  • Eastbound SR 520 between Montlake Boulevard and 92nd Avenue Northeast.
  • All eastbound SR 520 on- and off-ramps between Montlake Boulevard and 92nd Avenue Northeast.

Eastbound SR 520 will remain open between I-5 and Montlake Boulevard. The SR 520 Trail will also remain open. You can watch crews place the girders this weekend by tuning in to this camera. See below for other camera locations.

What neighbors should expect

Crews will work around the clock this weekend to set girders. We received the necessary permits for this work, including a temporary noise variance from the city of Seattle. The variance allows nighttime work to exceed the noise limits granted under the project’s Major Public Projects Construction Noise Variance (MPPCNV). Crews will do everything possible to complete this work quickly, quietly, and safely.

As always, stay up to date on closures and construction activities by visiting the Construction Corner map.

Crews set girders over SR 520 in Bellevue during a 2012 weekend highway closure as part of the SR 520 Eastside Transit and HOV Project.

Directional closures continue next weekend

Be prepared for more upcoming closures. Crews are planning to close westbound SR 520 across Lake Washington the weekend of Feb. 5-8, Friday night to Monday morning, to set more girders for the Montlake freeway lid. We’ll have more details about that closure next week.
