 Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Last week I had the privilege of giving the Republican response to Governor Inslee’s inaugural address. If you haven’t had a chance to watch it, you can view it here as well as read a transcript of my speech. It was an honor to be the only lawmaker in Olympia asked to speak on behalf of all of my Republican colleagues in the House and Senate to present our priorities for the state and was and a great stage for me to represent the people of the 6th District.

Integrity First

I have been working with Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich on legislation which would not allow arbitrators to change the discipline decided by sheriff’s and police chiefs when an officer has been found to have lied or broken the law. We’re calling this legislation “Integrity First” because this is what we believe our law enforcement officers should held to, integrity above all else.

Yesterday in my office I held a meeting with Sheriff Knezovich, Sheriff Salisbury from Mason County, the Washington Council of Police and Sheriffs President Craig Bulkley and from all sides. Negotiations lasted nearly two hours, and we were able to make significant progress on a draft version of the legislation, which I plan to introduce on Friday. I am honored to have been a part of this process as we worked to: identify a problem, have discussions with stakeholders to find the best solution for all parties, and work together to move the proposal through the legislative process. I have heard from many of you already and I look forward to letting you know new developments in the coming weeks.
