Dear Friends and Neighbors,

We've passed a major milestone in the session: House of Origin Cutoff! This is the deadline for bills to pass out of the chamber where they were first introduced.

I'm sharing two episodes of Berg Bill Basics this week: How Bills Move through Committeesand What Happens to Bills on the House Floor. We've JUST concluded voting on House bills on the House Floor - and we're beginning to hold hearings and vote on Senate bills in committee!

Deadlines like this always bring a chance to pause and reflect. I’m grateful for the hard work happening on behalf of our community, and I’m proud to share an update on several bills and budget investments I’ve been working on for you.

See you this weekend!

TOWN HALL

I hope you’ll join me and my seatmate, Brandy Donaghy, for an in-person town hall in the 44th Legislative District!

WHO: 44th LD Reps. Brandy Donaghy & April Berg (me!)
WHEN:
Saturday, February 21, 1:00 p.m.
WHERE: Mill Creek Family YMCA

We’ll share a brief update on the work we’re doing in Olympia and the progress we’re making this session. Most importantly, we want to hear directly from you.

What issues matter most to you and your family? What should we be prioritizing for Snohomish County? What questions do you have about the legislative session?

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Bills on the Move!

I’m proud to share that the House has passed two of my bills this session!

HB 2334 will bring clarity and fairness to cash transactions in Washington by establishing simple, consistent rounding rules now that the penny is no longer being minted. This commonsense update helps businesses transition smoothly while protecting consumers.

HB 2442 provides local governments with additional tax resources and greater flexibility in how certain revenues can be used. By modernizing funding tools and allowing communities to better align resources with local priorities, this bill supports essential services while promoting responsible, efficient budgeting at the local level.

Unfortunately, HB 2401, which would have created a Washington State Boys and Men’s Commission, did not move forward this session. While I’m disappointed, the conversations we had were meaningful and important. This bill laid critical groundwork, sparked thoughtful dialogue, and built momentum for continued work next year.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who responded to my survey about a Boys & Men Commission. So many of you shared powerful stories and ideas about the importance of strong role models, mental health support, and community for boys and young men. That input will continue to shape this effort moving forward.

BAM

I’m grateful for the bipartisan conversations that helped advance this work  and I’ll keep you posted on what comes next.

As we wrap up House of Origin cutoff, the work keeps moving: bills we passed now head to the Senate, Senate bills continue their journey in the House, and budget talks are heating up as we shape our state’s operating and transportation priorities.

to do list

There’s still a lot ahead - committee hearings, thoughtful amendments, negotiations, and votes in both chambers - but every step brings us closer to meaningful progress. My commitment remains steady: to protect families, support communities, and build a Washington where everyone can thrive.

Hope to see you this weekend!
