In-person compliance checks resuming for LCB Enforcement and Education Officers

In March 2020, the Enforcement and Education Officers from the Liquor and Cannabis Board (LCB) stopped doing on-site sales compliance checks in response to COVID-19.

Improving pandemic data has allowed the state to ease or lift most COVID-19 restrictions and LCB’s Enforcement and Education division has determined that restarting compliance checks is again safe, as well as necessary.

Compliance checks involve sending an Investigative Aide (IA) into a licensed business to attempt to buy age-restricted, regulated product (liquor, tobacco, vapor products, cannabis), all while under the supervision of an Enforcement Officer. If a sale is made to the IA, enforcement actions against the licensee and/or the employee who made the sale may happen based on each unique circumstance. Investigative Aides are part-time employees of the LCB who are under the age of 21; usually ages of 18-20.

If you need any assistance educating yourself or your staff about laws and strategies for making sure sales are not made to under-age, or overserved customers, there are many resources available to help.
