Hello Central Kitsap,
As fall approaches, the cooler weather and changing leaves and scenery make it a great time to get out and explore Kitsap County's parks, enjoy fall sports, or find other ways to connect with your community.
Celebrations for America's 250th anniversary continue through the Sharing our Stories program at Kitsap Regional Library. There are many other ways to get involved this fall by sharing your input at community meetings, attending workshops, or train to become a salmon docent at our annual Kitsap Salmon Tours event in November. We look forward to celebrating fall with you!

Silverdale Recycling and Garbage Facility to close September 21 until April 2, 2027 for construction
The Silverdale Recycling and Garbage Facility (SRAGF) will be closed September 21, 2026 through April 1, 2027, while construction continues as part of the facility improvement project. The full facility closure is necessary to allow construction to proceed safely and efficiently. During this phase, construction activities will prevent safe access to the facility for customers, staff, and service vendors.
Customers can sign up for curbside garbage, recycling, and organics (food and yard waste) collection services through WM: https://www.wmnorthwest.com/kitsap or 1-800-592-9995.
Customers can use the following facilities during the closure:
Hansville Recycling and Garbage Facility Wednesday - Monday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Olalla Recycling and Garbage Facility Friday - Monday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Olympic View Transfer Station (OVTS) Open daily 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.
The Kitsap County Solid Waste Division is developing a plan to provide periodic off-site recycling collection events in Central Kitsap while the Silverdale Recycling and Garbage Facility is closed. These events will provide collection for recyclable materials normally accepted at the facility. Information about event dates, locations, and accepted materials will be shared as details become available.
We appreciate your patience and understanding as we complete these important upgrades. Visit the project page for more information.

Kitsap County was recognized by the National Association of Counties (NACo) with a 2026 Achievement Award for the Pacific Building Housing Navigation Center. The annual awards program honors innovative and effective county government programs that strengthen services for residents.
Kitsap County’s Pacific Building Housing Navigation Center is a 75-bed, 24/7 continuous-stay, low-barrier emergency shelter serving individuals, couples, families, and their pets experiencing chronic homelessness. Unlike traditional night-by-night shelters, the Center integrates on-site behavioral health care, medical services, housing navigation, employment support, and pet co-sheltering into a single coordinated facility.
Started in 1970, NACo’s annual Achievement Awards program recognizes county government innovations. Awards are given in 18 different categories that reflect the vast, comprehensive services that counties provide. The categories include children and youth, criminal justice and public safety, county administration, information technology, health, civic engagement, and many more.

We're exploring one big question: What happens to a community when people stop doing things...together?
Our featured book, Bowling Alone, looks at how neighborhood connection has slowly faded -- fewer community groups, fewer shared spaces, fewer casual, "Hey, how are you?" moments.
Join Read, Roam, Rules for a guided walk through Silverdale as we explore the themes of Bowling Alone by Robert D. Putnam and their connection to the Silverdale Center Plan. Together, we'll examine how public spaces, housing, transportation, parks, and local businesses influence social connection, civic engagement, and community life. Experience the community firsthand while discussing how planning and thoughtful design can help create vibrant, connected, and resilient places.
Rain or shine, we’ll be out there. Please dress according to the weather.
Date: Saturday, October 17 from 9 to 11 a.m. Meeting point: Silverdale Waterfront Park, 3337 NW Byron St, Silverdale Distance: 2 miles
Free and open to all!

Kitsap County Parks is pleased to announce the completion of the Gordon Field 1 synthetic turf replacement project, marking the successful completion of another Capital Improvement Program (CIP) investment that strengthens community recreation, protects public infrastructure, and enhances quality of life for Kitsap County residents.
Following several weeks of construction, Gordon Field 1 has reopened with a new synthetic playing surface that will serve thousands of athletes, coaches, families, officials, volunteers, and spectators each year.
