When it comes to the holiday season, some people feel giddy at the chance to socialize and others may retreat. While knowing what brings you joy and your limits is healthy, ongoing loneliness or social isolation can be harmful to your health. The local seasonal changes and shorter daylight hours can also impact mood.

In an article from the National Institute on Aging, “Loneliness and Social Isolation — Tips for Staying Connected,” (click HERE for full article) they sort out loneliness as a distressing feeling from being alone or separated, while social isolation is the lack of having people to interact with regularly. The article also shares information about the connection between the two and the health of older adults, factors that may increase your possibility of experiencing loneliness or isolation, and strategies to protect your health.

To help ease loneliness and social isolation in Kitsap County, residents age 60+ may request free Social Check-In Phone Calls offered through the Aging and Disability Resource Network (ADRN), within the Kitsap County Division of Aging and Long Term Care (ALTC).

Calls are scheduled for consistency, with flexible frequency options, and can be paused or cancelled anytime by the call recipient. Call topics are individualized, based the person’s general interests, and are not intended as mental health counseling. Local staff, providing the check-in calls, are also able to connect people to applicable support resources, if needed.

Contact the ADRN at (360) 337-5700, (800) 562-6418 or email seniorinfo@kitsap.gov for more information or to request social, check-in calls.
