Staying motivated to exercise can be challenging. Congratulate yourself on any amount you accomplish!

In support of healthy aging options, Kitsap County Aging and Long Term Care and the YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties have partnered to expand access to the evidence-based Enhance® Fitness program (in-person or virtual) for Kitsap County residents age 60+, with or without a YMCA membership.

The evidence-based program is designed to reduce the risk of falls and help manage joint pain by improving strength, balance, and flexibility. You can track your progress and the group setting extends a social component, which can also give a boost to your health.

5 tips for exercise and staying healthy

Check out these 5 Tips to Help You Stay Motivated to Exercise, offered by the National
Institute on Aging (NIA), to help keep-up with any type of activity you choose:

1. Find ways to fit it in throughout your day- You’re more likely to get moving if it’s convenient.

2. Do activities you enjoy to make it more fun- Including trying something new.

3. Make it social- Find an in-person or virtual buddy or class to help stay motivated.

4. If you have break in your routine- start back slowly and ask family or friends for support.

5. Keep track of your progress- Make a plan and reward yourself when you reach your goal.

Safety Reminders

  • Ask your medical provider:
    • What types of exercise or activities would work for me
    • Are there any exercises or activities I should avoid
    • How does my health condition affect my ability to exercise
    • Is my preventive care up to date
  • Take your prescription and non-prescription medications safely and properly dispose of expired or unneeded medicine to reduce accidental, negative impact on your ability to exercise.
  • Talk with your prescriber or pharmacist if you have concerns or questions about your medication and how it may affect you before, during, or after exercise.
