As we transition to the holiday season and the end of the year, it’s common to experience a range of feelings. We can feel joy, excitement, stress, or anxiousness- sometimes all at once! Below are ideas to consider for embracing the holiday spirit while you continue helping a friend or family member with maintaining their independence.
Recharge
- Take breaks during your day.
- Reach out to friends and family, even if just a quick call, text, or email.
- Incorporate mindfulness moments- take time to recognize and think or say aloud to yourself what you observe (see, hear, feel, smell, or taste), without judgement.
- Reflect on what you feel positive about.
Simplify
- Delegate Responsibilities- Ask others to help with specific tasks.
- Choose Meaningful Traditions- Prioritize what matters most to you and yours.
- Virtual Celebrations- Use Zoom or other internet-based platforms to connect with
others.
Consider the Needs and Abilities of the Person You Help
- Discuss plans in advance to help you respect their preferences.
- Re-examine the person’s current interests & abilities, adjust expectations as needed.
- Update others in advance about changes in the person you help, since their last visit.
- Create a comfortable environment.
- Reduce overstimulation: Crowded gatherings can be overwhelming. Plan for time and spaces where you both can take breaks. Consider shortening the time of gatherings or schedule smaller groups of visitors in staggered intervals.
Reflect
As the year comes to a close, reflect on your caregiving journey. Celebrate all of your achievements and set intentions for the coming year. Consider what you need to thrive as an individual and as a caregiver. Reach out for support to help you get there.
