Assessing impacts of sea level rise over the next 75 years: Series of community meetings begins Oct. 9 in Kingston
Kitsap County launched a Sea Level Rise Vulnerability and Risk Assessment project last summer and has a public survey underway to gather input on impacts in unincorporated areas. Special community presentations take place in October and November at monthly meetings of Kitsap County's community advisory councils, starting in Kingston on Wednesday, Oct. 9. The Kingston Community Advisory Council meeting takes place 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Village Green Community Center, 26159 Dulay Road NE.
The vulnerability and risk assessment will identify assets with potential for loss or damage from sea level rise in the next 25 and 75 years such as facilities, homes, businesses, roads, stormwater infrastructure, and natural, cultural and recreational resources. The study includes the development of proposals offering region-specific actions and projects to address increased sea water interactions. The project is expected to be complete by June 30, 2025.
Kitsap County received funding from the Washington Department of Ecology to conduct the study. A story map was created as an interactive tool to keep the community informed of the project's progress and provide detailed information. Visit the project website at kcowa.us/KitsapSLR. Additional public presentations are scheduled in Manchester, Silverdale and Suquamish next month.
The Kingston meeting also features a presentation from Mike Merlino, executive director of finance and operations at the North Kitsap School District, on a proposed capital projects levy.
