How to Sort Holiday Waste
After the holidays, we're often left with a lot of stuff to get rid of. It's tempting to wad up that mountain of wrapping paper, bows, and other packaging and jam it into your recycle cart.
Unfortunately, most holiday waste can't go in recycling carts or the recycle bins at the Recycling and Garbage Facilities.
A quick sort can help you identify what's recyclable. Many holiday items are made of paper products. Cards, gift boxes, bags and wrapping paper may often be recycled in your curbside containers.

Watch for glitter and foil!
Items with glitter and foil must go in the trash. Take a moment to sort through your cards, gift wrap and bags for anything that might cause harmful contamination in the recycling containers. Remove bows and ribbons, and place them in the trash also.
Use the Holiday Recycle Guide (PDF) to help you and your family sort more holiday waste correctly.
Prepare for Busy Times
Expect longer than normal wait times. Holiday weekends are among the busiest times at our facilities. The heaviest traffic is typically between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Our scrap metal hauler's holiday schedule may cause unexpected closure of the scrap metal containers at Olympic View Transfer Station and Silverdale Recycling and Garbage Facility in the days before or after a holiday.
If the containers are full and closed when you arrive, do not leave your scrap metal on the ground. Pay for disposal, wait until another day, or take it to a private scrap metal recycler instead.
