Recycling and Garbage News

Extended closure of Olympic View Transfer Station starts 5 p.m. on Jan. 10, 2019

The 25-day closure lasts until Feb. 5 and includes the recycling area.

Olympic View, the busy garbage and recycling facility near the Bremerton airport, will close while contractors fix the facility's concrete tipping floor. The floor has eroded to the point where rebar is exposed.

The closure will also affect operations at the Silverdale, Hansville, and Olalla recycling and garbage facilities, but it will not affect curbside waste services or the hazardous waste facility.

Businesses that rely on the Olympic View facility should request a custom disposal plan to use during the closure.

All other facility customers should:

  • Avoid all county disposal facilities and hang on to waste from Jan. 11 to Feb. 5, 2019. Store waste in leak and rodent-proof containers protected from wind and animals. Keep recyclables dry.
  • Sign up for curbside collection for household waste. The closure does not affect curbside services. Homes in unincorporated areas can get monthly or twice monthly garbage and recycling services for less than Olympic View's $22.00 minimum fee.
  • Reduce waste. Get rid of extra holiday waste before the closure and postpone home projects that create more waste than usual.
  • Subscribe to email or text alerts in case we open the facility earlier than expected.
  • Visit the waste facility webpage often for project updates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I avoid the Silverdale, Hansville, and Olalla facilities during a project at Olympic View?

We haul garbage and recycling from these facilities to Olympic View, which will be a construction zone with limited space to process waste.

We need your help to reduce the amount of garbage and recycling brought to all facilities. Please store waste at home in leak and rodent-proof containers protected from wind and animals. Keep recyclables dry.

What if I need to dispose of household garbage or recycling during this repair?

If you absolutely cannot hang on to your household waste during this repair, the Silverdale, Hansville, and Olalla facilities and the privately-run Bainbridge Island Transfer Station will be open on their regular schedules.

However, these smaller facilities have restrictions that the Olympic View facility does not:

  • Rates and accepted materials are not the same as Olympic View.
  • Tipping from dump trucks or trailers is not allowed, so you must unload all waste by hand.
  • Credit cards are not accepted at the Silverdale and Olalla facilities. Check writers must have a valid ID matching the check.

Be prepared for long lines at these facilities. They may unexpectedly close when waste containers are full. Please be patient with facility attendants. We will update the facilities webpage with unexpected closures as soon as we can.

What if I need to dispose of business waste during this closure?

Request a custom disposal plan to use during the closure. We will do our best to contact you within one business day with a customized list of alternative disposal or recycling facilities. Some alternative facilities are as close as Belfair.
