Extended closure to Olympic View Transfer Station for critical repairs

Olympic View Transfer Station will close to the public between Jan. 11 and Feb. 5, 2019 while contractors complete urgent floor repairs.

The 25-day closure will also affect operations at the Silverdale, Hansville, and Olalla recycling and garbage facilities, but it will not affect curbside garbage and recycling collection.

The repair will fix the concrete tipping floor, which has eroded to the point where rebar is exposed.

The closure will affect everyone who uses county waste facilities.

“We need all customers of all facilities to hang on to garbage and recycling during the closure—unless they absolutely cannot wait,” said Pat Campbell, Kitsap County’s Solid Waste Division manager.

“The more waste people bring to Silverdale, Hansville, or Olalla, the harder this repair will be," she said, "We haul garbage and recycling from these facilities to Olympic View Transfer Station, but it will be a construction zone with limited space for waste."

The facilities in Silverdale, Hansville, and Olalla will stay open on their regular schedules during the repair, but Campbell warns they may have long lines and could unexpectedly close when waste containers are full. She urges people to get rid of extra holiday garbage and recycling before the Jan. 11 closure and postpone home projects that create waste.

The closure will not affect curbside garbage and recycling services.

Campbell recommends that people without curbside service sign up. More information is available at kcowa.us/curbside.

Business customers should request a custom disposal plan.

Businesses that rely on waste facilities should use this form to request a custom disposal and recycling plan to use during the closure. The open facilities in Silverdale, Hansville, and Olalla cannot accommodate business waste and do not allow tipping with dump trucks or tipping trailers.

The county scheduled the repair during a slow month to minimize customer impact, says Campbell. Floor damage is common at transfer stations because garbage-moving machines scrape floors already weakened by acidic garbage.

Olympic View Transfer Station processes garbage collected across the county and ships it by train to a landfill in Arlington, OR. Kitsap County and Waste Management, the facility operator, will share the estimated $1 million repair using disposal fees collected at Olympic View Transfer Station.

Customers can monitor the county waste facilities webpage for project updates. They can also sign up for email or text message alerts in case Olympic View Transfer Station opens earlier than expected.

Although the Silverdale, Hansville, and Olalla facilities will remain open during the project, they cannot accommodate business waste and do not allow tipping from dump trucks or tipping trailers. Waste must be unloaded by hand. Silverdale and Olalla facilities do not accept credit cards. They may have long lines and may close unexpectedly if containers are full.
